Journal Book Artworks, a collection of handmade journal books, the pages of which are filled with original artwork, a selection of collage, print and mixed media. The inspiration for the work comes from the story of Colmcille, The Battle of the Book and imagery from the area. The story of the battle is hidden within the journal pages. Concealed from view by mark making, collage and visual imagery, faded words with only fragments of sentences visible.
The inspiration for the work comes from the story of Colmcille and The Battle of the Book. In the first Journal Book, the written text telling the story of the battle has largely disappeared; it was printed and collaged over. Unseen now from view by mark making, leaving only faded words and fragments of sentences visible. The imagery used in the making of the work comes from symbols’ and imagery linked to Colmcille, such as the image of the dove and the copyright symbol Nature and the land are also strongly featured in the work. In particular the battle field, the symbol of the cross, marks the death of men on the battle ground.
The collection of journal books have all taken influence from the first journal book created in this collection. The work comes to a close with a completed collection of small mixed media paintings that are mounted and displayed in handmade journals.
